Many people talk about diet and exercise. But in the 21st century, those are often the least of our concerns. Yes, there are problems with obesity and chronic disease, but the toxicity of the environment is another significant issue. Industrial production means that a lot of people are breathing in and absorbing chemicals from the environment, some of which are potentially harmful.
The leading culprits are PCBs, PFAs, and various plastics. However, there are also plenty of heavy metals in the environment and the particulate matter that ejects from vehicle exhausts.
So, what can you do to detox and get some of these toxins out of your body?
Limit Your Exposure
You can start by using air purifiers in your home and avoiding smoking areas. These behaviors will reduce exposure to extreme environments and ensure that large doses don’t get into your body.
You can also use high-quality water filters to remove toxins from your drinking water. Again, these excel at removing chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants that might be in the supply.
Even your food choices could affect your exposure levels. More processed and animal-based food is associated with a higher toxic load than simple plant matter.
Support Your Liver
You also want to support your liver and kidneys’ ability to remove toxins from your system. These organs are responsible for processing and removing the vast majority of dangerous substances from the body and brain.
You can improve kidney and liver health by consuming a healthy, whole-food diet, with a focus on foods like broccoli that upregulate detox enzymes. You should also eat veggies from the allium family, like garlic and onions, as these have additional detoxifying properties.
If you want to bump this process up a notch, then herbs like milk thistle and turmeric are also beneficial. These seem to have unique actions in the body, which sets them apart from standard, healthy dietary choices.
Remove Specific Toxins
If you’re worried about specific toxins in your body, you can eat certain foods to remove them. For example, coriander is good at binding to heavy metals and removing them from the body, while green tea contains catechins that can fight back against oxidative damage from environmental pollutants.
You could also invest in a sauna. These help you sweat more, drawing more impurities from the body and helping them leave.
Be Careful With Supplements
You can also remove toxins from your body by being more careful with the supplements you choose. Some disreputable sources contain high levels of heavy metals, which could become dangerous if consumed regularly.
Ideally, source any supplements from reputable and third-party tested suppliers. Don’t buy products online unless you know the safety record of the company is excellent and other people have had success in using their products.
If you are going to use supplements to remove toxins, choose chlorella and spirulina for their chelation properties with heavy metals. You could also use activated charcoal for a similar effect for binding toxins in the gut after a large exposure.
