Matcha is becoming more and more popular lately and for good reason. Matcha can improve your mood, and well-being, and help with calmness, focus, and clarity to be more productive.
Making a matcha latte at home can seem intimidating but I can guarantee you that it is super easy and such a calming and mindful process.
What is matcha?
Matcha is green tea leaves that are grounded into a fine powder. It is the most popular form of ceremonial-grade Japanese green tea in the world.
Matcha has been used by Buddhist monks for centuries as a way to help them stay awake and alert during long hours of meditation.
The caffeine content in matcha is much more tolerable than the caffeine in coffee because it contains l-theanine which is good for focus and energy without the jitteriness and crash that sometimes comes from coffee.
Matcha also contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), chlorophyll, and more. It is full of so many amazing health benefits.

Tools for Making Matcha
Below are tools you can use when making matcha at home.
- Tea sifter – This tool is important because it helps to remove clumps.
- Bamboo Scoop (Chashaku) – This traditional tool helps to scoop the matcha into the whisk as well as use it to help sift the matcha or you can scoop it with a measuring teaspoon.
- Bamboo Whisk (Chasen) or Electric Whisk – An essential tool to help you whisk and froth your matcha.
- Whisk holder – If you use a bamboo whisk a whisk holder is important to help it to dry properly and hold its shape after cleaning it.
- Matcha Tea Bowl (Chawan) – This isn’t necessary but this type of bowl is helpful when whisking matcha with a bamboo whisk because it helps prevent spilling.
