Are you feeling like there is no balance in your life?
Are you busy, exhausted, and feel like you are constantly hanging by a thread?
You are not alone.
Balance is very hard to come by, and it takes work, dedication, and persistence to find.
You may never be completely balanced but being close is definitely something you will want to achieve.
When you are busy, you may feel like you are constantly bouncing back and forth between tasks and responsibilities, and there is no time to take a deep breath.
It is possible to find some calm among the crazy.
Here are some ways you can find balance when you’re busy.
Tips to Finding Balance in Life
Set designated rest days
It may sound difficult to rest when you know your to-do list is miles long, but your body and mind need it.
Schedule designated rest days on your calendar.
These could be once a month, twice a month, or however often you feel like you need them.
These days are for you.
Take a self-care day without work where you can do activities that fuel you.
Sleep in, go to the spa, get your nails done, or you can simply put on your comfiest clothes and binge your favorite television show.
After these rest days, you should be feeling well-rested, more creative, and prepared to tackle whatever comes next on your to-do list.
Take short breaks often
If you don’t take breaks from working and running around, balance is not possible.
Working without breaks can also lead to burnout.
Use a productivity timer like the Pomodoro method, or you can simply keep track of when you are going to take a break.
Breaks will refuel your creativity and motivation, and time away from work may result in different ways of looking at things and new ideas.
You can fill your breaks with personal time like playing with your kids or seeing a friend, or you can just take a few minutes to rest.
Always have something to look forward to
When life is busy and stressful, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down.
Making sure you always have something to look forward to can help you stay in positive spirits, even on your busiest days.
This could be a big vacation you’ve been looking forward to for months, or it can be as simple as knowing you’re going to order your favorite pizza for lunch or a date night.
Have this on your calendar and let it motivate you when you have a lot going on.

Pencil in some alone time
Balance is hard to find if you never take any time for yourself.
Alone time gives you an opportunity to refocus on yourself, your goals, and your desires.
It can help you clear your head before you take on everything life has to throw at you.
It is important to schedule some alone time daily, even if it is just for 5 minutes.
You can try doing this before you start your day or before going to sleep.
Fill your cup before pouring into others
When you are jumping from task to task and commitment to commitment, you end up so drained by the end.
Think about it, after a long day of countless meetings, you just want to lay on the couch and take a nap.
Yes, your day was busy, but you also didn’t take a moment to recharge when you are going from meeting to meeting.
If you are any sort of leader, you want to serve from your heart and not from your head.
You do this by taking care of yourself before trying to care of others.
If you are stressed and overwhelmed, you are not going to show up best for the people you are trying to serve.
Do something that serves you first, like breathwork or listening to calming music, before trying to serve others.
Get adequate rest
Sleep is so magical.
Being busy usually leads to stress which leads to overworking which can lead to ignoring one of the things our body needs the most, which is SLEEP.
You should always aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
When you get enough sleep, you wake up refreshed and energized for your day.
That sounds like exactly what you need when you are busy, right?
Being well-rested will make it easier for you to be productive and stay on track.
You’re going to need that energy if you are busy squeezing lots of tasks into your day!
Pay attention to who you spend your time with
I’m just going to say it.
People you spend your time with can be either life-giving or life-sucking.
We know people in both categories.
The life-giving ones inspire you, challenge you, and motivate you.
The life-sucking ones are always bringing you down and drain your energy.
Who you spend your time with can either make it easier or harder to find balance.
Be sure to surround yourself with people who lift you up and avoid the ones that bring you down.
Take care of your body and your mind
Just in case I need to say it again for the ones in the back, self-care is so important!!
Self-care means taking care of your mental and physical health, so it is crucial that you are taking care of both your body and your mind.
Be sure to squeeze in time for fresh air and exercise.
You can multitask and go for a walk or a run while listening to an educational podcast, e-book, or course module.
Go to the gym before you start your day or read some personal development books.
Staying active, mentally and physically, will not only keep you healthy, but it will keep you focused.
Final Thoughts
I hope these tips give you some confidence that finding some sort of balance IS possible, as long as you stay focused and work towards it.
Balance doesn’t happen in a day and in fact, it is something we all are working towards as our lives shift and evolve.
Balance is not a 50/50 split between work and life, but it is knowing when to give your work your full attention, your family and friends your attention, and yourself your attention.
Give yourself grace, and I hope you find these tips helpful along the way.

I struggle with taking rest because I feel like I should be productive. The reality is that even taking a break is productive. The pomodoro technique is incredible. I find that I fully concentrate on the task and achieve more in less time.

I always struggled getting any kind of alone time when my son was younger. I’ve been a single mom since he was 1 month old and I’ve worked 12 hour shifts. He never slept through the night so I tried getting as much sleep as possible. Now that hes starting to sleep all night, I’m finally able to get 30 minutes to myself at night time & its luxurious
Michelle says
Oh wow Talissa. I am glad you are able to get some sleep now.

I’m highly protective of my personal time, which means I have to say no a lot. It’s not always easy, but time is a precious commodity, and you are not obligated to give it.

Exactly Maura! Great thinking.

I do good at planning rest days & afternoons but I never actually take them off. I feel too guilty as my to do list is always growing! I need to focus on keeping promises to myself.

I am the same way Kari. That guilty feeling is hard to shake off. I like how you said keep promises to yourself.
